The Historic Supreme Court Ruling

In a landmark Taipei Supreme Court case, City of Taipei vs Driver Wu, it actually turns out that lightly beeping your horn twice while speeding through a red light does not make it ok to run the red light, even for taxi drivers.  Police Officer Wu jumped up and down for joy inside the Taipei Supreme Courthouse when the honorable judge Wong offered his verdict in the case. Mr. Wu, the defendant, who works as a taxi driver launched his crumpled up Taipei Times newspaper at the officer as he stormed out of the courthouse. His face allegedly looked redder than when he drinks two glasses of wine.

Officer Wu Overcame Insurmountable Odds

Our team visited Officer Wu two months ago when we first got word that the case was going to be appealed all the way up to the Taipei Supreme Court. He offered the following comments about whether or not he thought the case could hold up in court.

" Those taxi drivers have been terrorizing us for thirty-five years. After we are sworn into the Taipei police department, we are told we can not pull over a taxi driver for running a red light if the driver taps the horn lightly two times as he is running the red light. This came from when one of our officers pulled over a taxi driver on a rainy night for driving through a red light, and he angrily told our officer that we must leave him go because we can never prove that he didn't lightly tap his horn two times as he was driving through the red light. The driver continued to explain that it falls under a rule called, If you go beep beep, watch 'em weep.  And since that taxi driver was older than our officer, and this is Asia,  nobody ever dared to question the legitimacy of this policy."

The If You Go Beep Beep Watch 'Em Weep policy used to antagonize police officers all over the city. Officer Lee from the 33rd precinct elaborated more.

"Oh my God, I can't tell you how many times I radioed my commanding officer to let him know that I was about to pull over a taxi driver and he would radio back that's a 10-79, meaning you can't beet the if you go beep beep rule.  Most of the time someone running a  red light is the only action we get on the Taipei beat for a month.  It used to make me so upset. Although I never let those drivers see me cry, I must confess  I cried in my wife's arms after work many nights just thinking about how close I was to finally pull someone over for a traffic citation."

Red Lights- A Suggestion or Law For Taxi Drivers?

Our teams of reporters took to the streets to see if officers are actually enforcing this amendment to the law. They are happy to report back that the taxi drivers and even other drivers are stopping at red lights so much, that it almost feels like a red light is no longer just a suggestion in the city of Taipei, but actually an enforced law.

The Officers Hold The Strangest Celebration Ever

At press time, the officers on Officer Wu's force were planning a long night out for Officer Wu. They were going to kick things off with Karaoke. Then, they plan on starting shit with taxi drivers by marching past them with handmade posters that say, " Maybe You Went Beep Beep, But We're Gonna Make YOU Weep!"
